Information Sharing Between Professionals
Better Info, Better Outcome
As agencies, organisations and the business sector begin to work more closely together, there is a very real fear that some of that information exchange may be taking place without the people it affects knowing anything about it. Particularly, there are growing public concerns about how the increased use of Information technology and developments in partnership working may threaten the privacy and confidentiality of the individual. At the same time, sharing information about an individual within and between partner agencies is vital to the provision of co-ordinated and seamless care and/or services. There is an expectation that the necessary information will be shared, and concerns are expressed when this does not happen.
In order to meet those expectations and, at the same time, allay those fears, both public and private organisations in the community must demonstrate a commitment to share information responsibly, appropriately, and securely. They must establish procedures and agreements that manage the exchange of information, and make sure that those processes are open, transparent, and accountable, while keeping personal information protected throughout.
This Charter states the principles which will be followed whenever signatories share personal information, and establishes the commitments they have made to ensure that those principles are adhered to consistently and effectively.
Information Sharing Guidance for People Working with Children and Families
This document gives guidance about sharing information for anyone who works with children and families in a professional capacity. It sets down information about

- circumstances where a child is at risk of significant harm,
- what is confidential information?
- what is consent and who should give it?
- Sharing information securely and
- Recording your actions
The guidance has been endorsed by the Children's Board and should therefore be followed by all of the agencies represented on the Board. It should be regarded as good practice by everyone working with children and families.
